Theme - Parties are always more fun with a theme and the more the hostess is into the theme the more fun the party is.  Below are a few ideas to get you thinking.  Once you decide on a theme, think of a creative way to express that in your invitations.  Ask your guests to dress the part, include confetti, attach a casino chip or whatever you can think of to get your guest excited about your themed New Years Eve Party.

Decorations - Start with the basics: Happy New Year's banners, New Year's balloons,  New Year's Party Hats, and New Year's Streamers and then spice it up with a balloon drop, ceiling dangles and a disco ball.  Click Here to see more decorating ideas.

Early Evening Mingle Material - Obviously you will be celebrating the year and many of your New Year's decorations will reflect that but consider placing objects around the room that represent specific events throughout the year to serve as New Year's decorations and conversation starters as well.  Here are some reminders to get you started:
  • Personal Events - Photos of other parties you attended that year
  • News Clippings
  • Ad from Disneyland 50th anniversary
  • Movies
Your memorabilia should stand out in a way that is obvious to your guests so that they make their way around the room to view and discuss them all.  It can be something as simple as red squares.  Get old picture frames from a second hand store, paint them red and frame articles or pictures for discussion or take the glass out and lay them flat on the side table, placing one of your articles inside. Painted shoe boxes work too or you can use a single yellow silk flower next to each item to draw your guests attention.  Just about anything will do as long as it is consistent.  A very simple mingle material is your TV. with a little preparation your guests will be laughing for hours. Just check your local TV listings about two weeks before new years for shows like:
  • funniest commercials of 2005
  • best music videos of 2005
  • 2005 best movie countdown
  • most outrageous moments of 2005
and record them all back to back and play your collection at the party.  This will prompt discussions and laughter even if your guests don't know each other.

Another Party Starter - play simple party games that encourage interaction.  Hand each guest a small red piece of yarn as they enter and explain that all the guests are playing " Do you remember?".  Ask them to tie the yarn around their pinky fingers and play along.  The object of the game is to collect as many pieces of yarn as you can by the end of the night. If he catches a guest saying the words " Do you remember", he is to confiscate their string.  If that guest then catches another using the phrase, they can earn a string back.  You would be surprised how many times this phrase will be used on New Years Eve.  Just don't forget to have a prize for your winner like a trophy,

Turn the Heat Up - Your guests have mingled and munched and now it is time to dance the night away.  Ok, Ok that would be too easy. Many parties just don't end in scooting the furniture over and dancing like you are 23 again.  So what do you do to keep the party moving?
 * Karaoke   * DVD trivia games   *Charades   * Poker   * OR... Encourage story telling by throwing out topics that every guest must complete such as:

"the most embarrassing thing I did this year was..."

"the funniest thing I saw this year was.."

"the most expensive thing I bought this year was..."

Light Up The Night -  Don't forget to have light up glow sticks, LED cups, colorful glowing wands, novelties, and party items.  Adults love them and we don't get to play with them to often (Kids love them too)  Click Here for LED and Glow party ideas.

11:50 - Nobody likes to miss the midnight celebration on New Years Eve so be sure to set a timer and remind your guests 10 minutes before the ball drops.  Be sure to have plenty of noise makers, streamers and bubbles on hand and pass out the words to Auld Lang Syne so everyone can sing along.  Auld lang syne is Scotch for old long since, hence long ago. Does anyone know the words?  Here...I'll help you out:

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind,

should old acquaintance be forgot,

in days of auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne.

We'll take a cup O' kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

And here's a hand, my trusty friend,

and gie's a hand O' thine,

We'll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

Winding Down - After the stroke of midnight and Cinderella runs out of the ball, you are going to want to offer fresh snacks and coffee (and maybe some aspirin?).  Make sure your guests are safe to drive home or have an alternate plan.  Cab rides, designated drivers, and sleeping bags can all save lives!
